FIRE
Many people think
the only thing to fire fighting is putting the “wet stuff” on the “hot
stuff”. That may have held true years ago, but that is not the case
any more. We have highly trained firefighters who have spent countless hours
training in Pittsylvania
County, Henry County, etc… When battling house
fires we have a lot of different things taking place that is not always noticed by the public eye. We take special considerations in saving life and protecting property.
We manage the amount of water we use to extinguish the fire so further structural damage is minimized. While fire fighters are working on extinguishing the fire, we may have other teams conducting a primary
search for victims if we suspect anyone could be in the structure. There are
associated risks in conducting these tasks, but our professionals utilize their training superbly and are prepared to risk
their lives to save yours. We have a Safety Officer at each incident we are working
who ensures the safety of our members as well as the public. If you ever show
up at one of our scenes and are asked to stand back or asked to move to another location, please do not be offended. We have to do this from time to time to protect you from injuries, as well as protect
the privacy of any patient we may be working on at the time.
EMS
Years ago EMS was not very well organized
and the primary goal was to get the patient in the “meat wagon” (ambulance) as soon as possible and rush to the
hospital. Things have changed considerably over the years as emergency medicine
is making advancements every day.
All of the EMS agencies in Pittsylvania
County, VA follow strict regional protocols issued by Western Virginia
Emergency Medical Council, Inc. Numerous physicians throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia
have shared their expertise, knowledge and ideas to develop this useful tool. Adhering
to this protocol ensures that all EMTs in our county treat various patient conditions the same way across the board. This eliminates any guessing games and provides a better quality of care for patients
requiring our services.
There are several providers on our department with 10+ years of Fire/EMS experience. Quite a few of our members have previous military experience. Our volunteers consist of professional (paid) fire fighters and EMS providers
from local state government agencies, health care professionals, school teachers, etc...
We utilize the “Golden Hour” approach when on scene of most incidents. The “Golden Hour” is the first hour after an incident occurs. Getting the patient to the ER within this first hour is paramount for many patient’s survival. We operate in a rural area in Pittsylvania
County, and we are one of the few agencies that will transport to three hospitals:
Danville Regional Medical
Center (Danville, VA), Memorial Hospital of Martinsville
and Henry County (Martinsville,
VA) and Morehead Hospital
(Eden, NC). Patients are transported to the closest medical facility. In
most cases, it takes us 20+ minutes to get to the ER. If you add the response
time, time on scene and time to get to the ER, you are not left with many, if any, minutes to spare. Our EMTs work thoroughly, yet expeditiously on all calls to get patients to the hospital for further evaluation
by a physician.
If you see
red lights on the side of the road, please remember to GIVE US A BREAK. We would appreciate you slowing down and staying focused on navigating your vehicle
by the accident scene safely to avoid another accident.
